Michelle Burns

Head of Strategic Business Development – Early Years
Findel

For almost two decades, Michelle Burns has been building her career at Findel, a leading UK distributor of school and educational resources and part of the Manutan Group. Sitting at the crossroads of customer needs, strategic partnerships, and internal collaboration, Michelle reflects on her journey and what continues to drive her every day.

Tell us about your career at Findel.

I first joined in an administrative role within the customer service team. Before long, I moved into merchandising and then marketing, where I organised trade shows for our three brands at the time. After a short break, I returned as a merchandiser before moving across to sales.

That’s where things really took off: I held a number of positions before becoming Head of Strategic Business Development, specialising in Early Years. That was a turning point for me, and it was also when I decided to invest in my own professional development

What made you want to go back into training?

I began working towards a Level 3 qualification in Early Years. It gave me a much deeper understanding of child development, which helps me support our customers, partners and colleagues more effectively. I even spent one day a week in a nursery for eight months to get hands-on experience of life on the ground.

It was also a very personal challenge: going back to study at 47, doing research, writing assignments… it was tough, but hugely rewarding. I’m really grateful to Findel for backing me all the way, giving me the time and even covering part of the cost.

What does your role involve today?

I manage a portfolio of strategic clients, including one of the UK’s largest nursery groups. I also work closely with our other departments, purchasing, marketing, sales, export, to make sure we’re meeting the needs of the Early Years sector.

I’m also the main contact for some of our key partners, such as the NDNA (National Day Nurseries Association) and Alice Sharp, a former teacher who delivers training and develops products with us.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

No two days are the same, and I absolutely love that. I also get to build close relationships with customers, colleagues and partners. On top of that, I attend training sessions and events, and meet inspiring people who open my eyes to new ideas

But most of all, I know that what I do has a positive impact on children’s lives. We’re providing resources that help them grow, learn and thrive. That’s what keeps me motivated.

What would you say to someone thinking of joining Findel?

I’d say: go for it! Every role comes with its challenges, but if you throw yourself into it, it’s an incredible journey. For me, these years at Findel have been the most rewarding of my career, and it’s only the beginning!
