Manutan chooses integrator Dematic to optimise AutoStore® automated storage solution

12 December 2024

Manutan, Europe’s leading B2B e-commerce company specializing in the distribution of equipment and supplies for businesses and local authorities, announces a strategic partnership with Dematic, an expert in automated warehouse solutions. Dematic becomes the integrator of the AutoStore® solution at Manutan’s Gonesse logistics platform, a fully automated system featuring 60,000 storage bins managed by 68 robots. This marks a decisive step in enhancing the site's performance and environmental responsibility.

The Challenge of Upgrading an Existing Mechanized System

Following the 2021 extension of its logistics center by 9,000 m², which included the installation of an AutoStore® system and brought the total warehouse area to 50,000 m², Manutan continues its transformation by partnering with Dematic to overhaul the AutoStore® system.

This project, which involved changing integrators for the first time in AutoStore®’s history, was accomplished without interrupting operations. It represents a significant modernization of the site, with key improvements including:

  • Groundbreaking Technological Migration: Conducted in close collaboration with Dematic, this upgrade included server, interface, and database changes, as well as the deployment of a robot management software (WCS). This was a global first for an AutoStore® system operating during production.
  • Equipment Optimization: Installation of a new conveyor system and integration of the CarouselPort™ workstation, featuring three rotating arms for handling bins. These solutions accelerate and streamline order preparation.
  • Space Reorganization: Addition of a 300 m² mezzanine to accommodate new equipment and improve operational workflows.
  • Enhanced Productivity: Shipping capacity has increased by nearly 70%, and direct productivity has risen by 60%.

“This transformation allows us to double the number of orders processed daily. Automation also improves our employees’ working conditions, enabling them to focus on higher-value tasks,” explains Alexis Royer, Manutan Group’s Logistics Director.

A Partnership Aligned with CSR Goals

This project fully aligns with Manutan’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy. By optimizing warehouse space and modernizing equipment, Manutan has implemented new actions to reduce packaging waste and volume. Adjustments to carton sealing machines and increased use of envelopes instead of boxes reduce overall shipment volume. This optimization, combined with fewer required truckloads, directly contributes to Manutan’s carbon neutrality goal under the FRET21 initiative.*

Additionally, the storage solution enables value-added services (VAS) such as placing delivery notes on the outside of packages, enhancing the customer experience.

“This project is significant for Dematic on several levels. Working with a client committed to modernizing their facility is always a complex challenge in terms of operational continuity,” says Alain Bussod, President of Dematic France. He adds, “With our expertise, we are well-positioned to facilitate the transition from an existing system to a more efficient and cost-effective one. Our long-term commitment ensures the sustainability of both the software and equipment within its ecosystem. The promising start to this project highlights Manutan’s exciting growth opportunities, which we are delighted to support geographically and in their business expansion.”
