Everything you need to know about our product environmental impact score

16 November 2023

In September, the Manutan Group announced the launch of its product environmental impact score. Based on a recognised methodological framework, this approach enables us to measure and display products’ environmental impacts, so that they can be compared within the same category. All the details of our approach are summarised in the infographic.

A virtuous approach

We want all our stakeholders to benefit from this initiative. Firstly, it enables our customers to make informed choices, in line with their responsible purchasing policy. And our suppliers can now assess the environmental performance of their products and thus initiate an eco-design approach.

A tried and tested methodology

To measure the impact, we rely on methodological guidelines dedicated to each product category: the PEF (Product Environmental Footprint) guidelines adopted by the European Union for PPE (personal protective equipment) and the ADEME (French Agency for Ecological Transition) guidelines for furniture.

Each set of guidelines defines the impacts to be taken into account and their weighting, by analysing the product’s entire life cycle. The impact calculation is based on 12 to 16 environmental indicators, which are:

  • Climate change
  • Water consumption
  • Acidification
  • Ozone layer depletion
  • Freshwater ecotoxicity
  • Marine eutrophication
  • Land eutrophication
  • Freshwater eutrophication
  • Fine particles
  • Land use
  • Use of mineral resources
  • Use of energy resources
  • Carcinogenic human toxicity
  • Non-carcinogenic human toxicity
  • Ionising radiation
  • Photochemical ozone formation

How does it work?
The environmental impact score is shown on the product’s page so that it can be easily compared with other products in the same Manutan category. This score is accompanied by a grading system ranging from A (low impact) to E (high impact) to make it easier for everyone to understand.

Through our product environmental impact score, we want to support the transformation of the sector towards a more sustainable model, and thereby engage in Entrepreneurship for a Better World!
